The feast day was originally called Our Lady of Victory, established by Pope Pius V in 1571 to commemorate the Christian victory at the Battle of Lepanto (victory was due to the intercession of Our Blessed Mother and all who prayed the rosary for victory) Pope Leo XIII changed the feast name to Our Lady of the Rosary and wrote eleven encyclicals about our Lady of the Rosary and its feast.
